“When the ark of the Lord came to the City of David, Saul’s daughter Michal looked out of a window and saw King David leaping and dancing in the Lord’s presence, so she despised him.” -2 Samuel 2:16
This story is a sad one! Michal was a very selfish and self-centered woman. You see, people can only pretend for a while.
This past Sunday, we planted a garden. We had a huge pot from last year. When I looked in it, I saw it had plants. My daughter said, “Oh mommy, look, we have the lettuce (form of a salad) we planted last year!” I saw there were different kind of leaves that were growing. I asked my daughter, “Are you sure? The leaves look weird.” My daughter pointed the lettuce leaves verses the few weeds. I started to pull the weeds. My daughter stopped me. “Mommy, leave them alone. Don’t disturb the plants.” I said, “Ellianna, I’m worried we might eat the weeds by mistake!” My daughter’s immediate response spoke to me loudly. “Mommy, what do you mean? You will be able to tell which is which when they grow.”
Did you all catch that as I did? Everyone might start in the same pot, share the same spot, be a part of the same surroundings, but, eventually, you can tell who is who and what is what. I wanted to just get rid of the weeds. In this particular instance, I couldn’t or it would hurt the real plant. I love my, “Wow” moments! So, it was with Michal.
If you have read about the life and times of King David, one of the greatest kings to ever rule this world, you would know his father-in-law King Saul who took Michal, David’s wife and gave her to another man. Can you believe that? When David was about to be crowned king of Israel, he was already married to two other wives. He didn’t have to respect Michal at all. She was the daughter of the man who tried to kill him and gave her to another man to marry. She had been defiled if you want to even go there. David refused the crown. Talk about a guy every woman should admire and want. He wouldn’t be king unless Michal his wife was returned to him. What was David doing? Respecting his wife and showing her honor.
How does Michal pay him back? Dishonoring him. Can you even fathom this?King David recovered the Ark of the Covenant. There was rejoicing in the entire land. Finally, the very presence of God was back in Israel. It was a day of great joy and feasting. Everyone was out in the streets dancing along with David. Michal, instead of joining her husband in praise and being proud of this great achievement, hates him. Seriously, what was she thinking?
I will tell you what she was thinking. Michal had no regard for God or His ways. You see, there’s no such thing as respecting anyone if you don’t respect and fear God. Her heart was not like that of her brother Jonathan who loved God and loved his friend David. Her heart was like her father, King Saul. She not only hated him but approached him as soon as he entered the city and told him off. She called him a fool for dancing before God. She made up stories and made it sound like what he did was disgusting, gross, and evil. She turned his dance before God as a sexual act before the women whom she called slaves. What a foolish and degrading approach she took against her husband.
Here’s what so incredibly sad. King David was coming to bless his family. David was an incredible man who loved God, and blessed people. He had a heart for God. He had just given out blessings to every person in Israel. To every male and female. Now he was about to bless his family. Look, at this verse with me.
“When David returned to bless his family, Saul’s daughter Michal came out to meet him. 'How dignified Israel’s king was today! He was exposing himself before the eyes of the slave girls of his palace staff—like a mindless fool might expose himself!'”
How Disgraceful, dishonoring, and disrespectful she was towards her husband. A man who just did one of the most greatest things ever. Instead of praising, honoring, and feeling prideful for what her husband accomplished she rebuked him, and accused him of deeds he hadn’t committed. Look at this verse very carefully. His intention was to bless her. “He came home to bless his family.” She took that sacred and amazing moment and turned into an ugly and terrible moment by her ungodly behavior. Her behavior bothered God too. He wasn’t happy either. That moment in time cost her dearly. God closed her womb, never to give birth and know the love between a mother and a child. Sad!
Please understand, when we do things that hurt our mates or others we pay dearly. God plans are to bless us. I want to look at the spiritual side of this story. I feel God’s Spirit showing us something very urgent and important. When we hate others for the godly things they do and mock them by lying about their behaviors, God closes our spiritual birthing. Please understand, King David did NOT expose himself. That was her charge against him. I would like to ask her a couple of questions. Michal, did you not understand what the Holy Presence of Almighty God means to be back in Israel? Did you not understand this mighty thing YOUR husband accomplished for the House of David and for all the Israelites?
You see, godly people recognize godly things. Godly people support, praise, honor, and respect actions that please God. Today, let’s learn from the unwise actions of a very foolish woman. Don’t abort the purposes and plans God has for you by being rude and judging the motives of others. Many people fail and commit these very sins.
Be people of integrity, respect, and honor. David’s reply was priceless, “so I celebrate before the LORD. Yes, and I am willing to look even more foolish than this, even to be humiliated in my own eyes! But those servant girls you mentioned will indeed think I am distinguished!”
Be bold enough even if foolish people accuse you of foolishness. What’s foolish to fools is priceless and honorable in the eyes of God. Be God pleasers and forgeot about the fools who are only capable of accusations and murdering reputations.
We are better than this, friends.
