“So Abram went to live near the great trees of Mamre at Hebron, where he pitched his tents. There he built an altar to the Lord.” -Genesis 13:18
Last night before going to bed, I felt to read Genesis 13. As I was out running last night, a friend on Facebook messaged me. The message was simply a few verses from this chapter. Immediately, I felt in my spirit to read the entire chapter.
As I read this chapter, the last verse just jumped right out, and I felt compelled to study this verse. I was stunned by how very significant this verse was. I literally felt my Spirit leap for joy at the discovery of this very deep and meaningful verse.
The story begins with Abram (God had not changed his name to Abraham yet) and Lot. The two men grew in possessions. The herdsmen began to fight over the pastures. Abram told Lot, “Let’s not have any quarreling between you and me, or between your herders and mine, for we are close relatives. Is not the whole land before you? Let’s part company. If you go to the left, I’ll go to the right; if you go to the right, I’ll go to the left.” Lot looked around and picked what he thought was the better land.”
I always had an issue with Lot. God never told Abraham to take Lot. He told him to take his wife and go. We can safely assume Lot saw an opportunity to leave and he took it, and God allowed it. Lot just wasn’t on the same spiritual realm as his Uncle Abraham to receive similar blessings. He became rich because of Abraham, but he didn’t have the actual call of God as Abraham. Lot was greedy, unappreciative, and rude. In the end, he lost all his possessions. Greed never succeeds.
I don’t know about you, but if someone asked me to pick first, I couldn’t do it. Many times I’m asked to pick first, (I hate that) I pick the smallest or not the best. Many a time, with disgust in his/her voice, the person will say, “Oh, come on put that back!” He/she will give me the better thing, and I always give it back. I can’t be happy with me choosing the best. I don’t understand how Lot, who became rich due to his uncle, could be so greedy and take what he thought was the better land. He was so disrespectful in every possible way. That is my opinion. No hate mail please.
However, God was protecting Abram. In order for the blessings to come to Abram, he had to separate himself from Lot. There couldn’t be anymore blessings until Lot left. Please allow the Spirit of God to show you what the Spirit has to say. Sometimes in order for the full promises of God come to come to pass you must separate yourself from the people or the things that stand in the way of your full blessings and calling. Many people miss it right here.
Why do I say this? Take a look at what happens next. “The Lord said to Abram after Lot had parted from him, 'Look around from where you are, to the north and south, to the east and west. All the land that you see I will give to you and your offspring forever. I will make your offspring like the dust of the earth, so that if anyone could count the dust, then your offspring could be counted. Go, walk through the length and breadth of the land, for I am giving it to you.'”
You see, it was after Lot left the Lord spoke to Abram. Lot had to leave before God could speak and before Abram became Abraham. The promises here are enormous, and Lot didn’t belong. God had to allow the quarreling to shake up Abram into a reality check. Hey, Abram, you took Lot. I didn’t ask you to do that, but now it’s time to say goodbye because Lot isn’t who you think he is. I can’t bless you with him. Part ways, and sometimes people don’t leave until you give them what they want. Go ahead Lot be greedy take what you want. God will take care of me. That’s the easiest way I can say it.
REFLECTION: “So Abram went to live near the great trees of Mamre at Hebron, where he pitched his tents. There he built an altar to the Lord.” Let me explain just how very significant this was. By dwelling near these great trees of Mamre he was exactly where God wanted him to be. You see, the name Mamre means vision. He once again had the God given vision for his life. God gave him a huge promise just before he relocated. Do you see this vision, too? Just in case he was wondering, God sent him on the opposite side from Lot, total opposite how profound is this? Even if Lot picked first, they were totally opposite people. Everyday Abram looked all around him and saw those trees, and he knew what they were called, vision. Your environment is everything. Remember this always. Vision is everything. People and things can make your vision obscured.
Next important thing about this last verse God showed me was the name of the place Abram dwelt in, Hebron. The meaning of Hebron means communion! Abraham had communion with God. God communicated His perfect will to Abram. The hand of God was very powerfully on Abram. Do you see what I see? Do you hear what I hear? Please catch this important truth. Abram walked in VISION and COMMUNION with GOD. No way could he miss this. There’s the vision trees, and I live in communion with God.
Do you know what it means to walk in vision and communion with God? It means you are in the absolute center of God’s will. Abram could not be there without the separation of Lot. God knew that. He allowed Lot to walk only up to a certain point and then ties had to be severed. Lot could not go with Abram because of his attitude. After the separation Abram now was giving his specific calling, with promises so incredibly awesome. Oh I want Abraham’s life. I always loved his character and his love, surrender, and obedience towards God.
Are you living with vision and communion with God? Today, there’s a calling taking place. God is calling you to choose where you want to be? I am totally overwhelmed by this verse. I can’t believe last night God placed on a friend’s heart to send me just a few verses, they were on the blessings of Abraham, God’s promises to him. God said, “Go home and read the entire chapter.” I read the chapter and God said, “Study the last verse,” I really didn’t understand at first, but as I began to study each word, God began speaking, and He is still not done speaking to me about it.
I love God’s Word. I want to encourage you to study His Word. Grasping His Vision for you only can happen if you are in communion with Him. Where have you pitched your tent? Mine is in “Vision and Communion!”

PRAYER: Heavenly Father, You desire to communion with Your children, Lord, I know You have great plans for my life. Lord, I ask that if anything needs to be removed from my life that You show me what it is so I can do what it is You have called me to do. As I draw close to You, I know You are drawing close to me. Show me the plan You have for me. Give me the boldness and courage I need as I step out in faith and obedience to Your calling on my life. Be my Shield, my Strength, my Joy, and my Portion. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
