“Jesus replied, ‘I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry again. Whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. But you haven’t believed in me even though you have seen me. However, those the Father has given me will come to me, and I will never reject them.'” -John 6:35-37 We eat bread to sustain us as well as to quench physical hunger. And so it is with Jesus when it comes to spiritual hunger and spiritual thirst… Some of us remember what it was like before Christ, and some of us don’t even want to think about. We remember the things we tried to satisfy the longing of our soul, something that would fill us, but nothing quenched the longing we had. Then when we got a taste of the Bread of Life, we began to understand the joy and peace He gives, filling us with hope, and through Him, we have life because He is Life (John 14:6). Now we see here, He is the Bread of Heaven.
As we remember the death and burial and resurrection, let us also remember He is our all in all. In order for our spiritual hunger to be quenched and to sustain our spiritual life, we must be found in Christ and in right relationship with Christ. So let us cling to Christ, following His teachings and His ways, and do what He commands us to do (1 Timothy 1:19).
REFLECTION: "I am the living bread that came from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever. The bread I will give to bring life to the world is my flesh," (John 6:51 GW). Everything you need is found in Christ. "The advantage of the manna was small, it only referred to this life; but the living Bread is so excellent, that the man who feedeth on it shall never die. This bread is Christ's human nature, which he took to present to the Father, as a sacrifice for the sins of the world; to purchase all things pertaining to life and godliness, for sinners of every nation, who repent and believe in him," (Matthew Henry Commentary).
PRAYER: Heavenly Father, Thank You for feeding me with the Bread of Heaven and giving me Living Waters, quenching my hunger and thirst. Thank You for the price You paid. You have provided me with all I need in order to live for you so I spend eternity with You. Let me always hunger and thirst after You that I might seek You all the days of my life. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
